Transportation of fish cages – Loch Garasdale, Scotland

Helirig helped client Mainstream Scotland transport PVC fish cages from an assembly yard on the coast to a fish farm in Loch Garasdale.

  • The load — 8 cages measuring 17 metres in diameter with a maximum weight of 2,800kg.
  • The lift — Multiple 12m slings were attached at equally spaced lifting points to prevent distortion to the cages.
  • Distance — Helirig transported the cages 5 miles from assembly yard to the loch.
  • Duration — In perfect flying conditions, the lifts were completed in less than 60 minutes.

In perfect flying conditions, Helirig completed the task set by Mainstream Scotland to transport PVC fish cages from an assembly yard on the coast to a fish farm in Loch Garasdale. The fish cages are used for the fresh water stage in the farming of salmon before the subsequent transportation of the young fish to sea water cages.

Helirig were chosen to complete this task with a helicopter because the cages are a huge 17m in diameter and too large to move along the public road or the access tracks to the Loch. There was also insufficient space adjacent to the Loch to assemble the cages closer to their required final location.
